Atmail 6 Progress report

November 30, 2008

The Webadmin backend is taking shape, the core is in place and implementation of all the functionality (current and new) is progressing smoothly. Please send us any wishes you have for the Webadmin so that we can consider adding it to Atmail 6.

Work has also begun on the Webadmin UI.

The interface is entirely AJAX, leveraging its power through jQuery, JSON and a host of plugins. Intelligent use of caching and thin client techniques will also be implemented to product a fast clean UI.

As always your feedback is most welcome.

Watch this space.

Allan.

  2. What we’d LOVE to see on the webadmin is information/graphs on the number of active SMTP/IMAP/POP connections. This would be a huge help in optimizing the configuration for “normal” usage, troubleshooting issues and ensuring that growth is planned for accordingly.

  3. For the main webadmin, it might be a good idea to have Exim queue management. Like actually be able to view a list of all of the messages that are backed up in the queue, and the ability to delete or repush them to Exim. The pagenation and sorting on the webadmin has also always been pretty buggy and akward (left facing arrow for next page, no way to know what page number you’re on, and when you change sort it doesn’t take you back to page 1).

The subadmin is really what could use more work. They should be able to create their own domain wide whitelist and blacklist entries, instead of forcing them to send them to us and make them server wide. As it is now doesn’t scale well for 50+ domains. It would also be nice if all of the usage graphs worked for subadmins.

Both subadmin and webadmin should allow for changing of spam settings for an account without logging in to the account.

  4. Please implement web based greylisting in the Webadmin. This has been documented on how to do it for almost a year in the forums and any tools that can make fighting SPAM easier should be a must.

I’d also like to see the ability to automatically purge messages in the SPAM folder and Trash folder after X number of days in the Webadmin. I know this can be implemented through cron jobs but it doesn’t seem to work as it should given the documentation in the KB, and having it in the Webadmin would be slick.

The ability to restrict sign-up by IP in the Webadmin by specifying IP’s that are allowed to create accounts and/or some sort of CAPTCHA implementation on the sign-up page as well to reduce the number of bots from signing up for accounts and getting our servers IP’s blacklisted. I mean heck you have it implemented right below this text box before I can submit a comment so obviously you guys know how to code it.

  6. Thanks for all the feedback on the new Webadmin for Atmail.

    Just to confirm:

    * Greylisting on/off will be a great addition, and we are keen to implement this in

    * Subadmin will have a complete rewrite and be much easier to maintain as a sub-user

    * Auto Purge messages, check, this will be included

    * New graphs are implemented that can map IMAP/POP3/SMTP connections, also working on a Google map mash-up for a heatmap for where users are located/logged in for geo-mapping.

    * CAPTCHA support, we’d like to extend this into a plugin for users to enable/disable, but not in the core package.

    * Atmail 6 ETA, Feb/March BETA, April 2009 full release

Thanks for all the comments, we are keen to improve the Webadmin, and next week we will post some screenshots of the new setup.

  7. We would like to be able to use google ads or other ads in the webmail interface. If we could use the web admin to publish ads, insert ad code, that would be great.

  8. a login screen that comes with atmail that has only one text box for their login, there complete email address. People get into a tizzy about having to enter their info into two different boxes, one for their username and another for the domain name. They want to just enter in the login info into one big box and have the page do the rest. Maybe have it so the admin can choose which type of login boxes appear from the webadmin side.

  10. FULL support for Safari would make me so happy and a native iPhone app or webapp would be pretty cool.

Definitely could use the ability to control Exim more closely.

Server side “rules” would be nice too. By that I mean that when Exim receives a new mail, it runs the headers (all of them, not just from/to/subject) past a set of rules (per user or global) which tells it what to do with the message (e.g. move to folder, forward, delete, etc). Now that would be very useful.
