 @Mail PHP Webmail released

February 28, 2007

After 18 months of development we are proud to announce the new @Mail PHP version is available! This includes support for the complete Webmail-client of @Mail.

The Email-server edition of @Mail in PHP will be available to download on the 14th March 2007. In the meantime the port is now complete for the PHP Webmail interface of @Mail.

Our team took the opportunity to upgrade @Mail to PHP, since we see this as the future of @Mail. While Perl served well since we originally developed the software in 1998, PHP is clearly a standard for web-development over Perl.

The PHP port of @Mail brings increased performance over the previous version, improved code design, the installation is much easier and no command line is required. You can even install the Webmail client of @Mail without a dedicated server or root access, simply FTP the directory to your server and use the Web-based install utility!

New Install Utility

The move to PHP helps customers integrate and modify the software into their environment, with a programming language that more developers understand. A migration script is available for existing clients to upgrade to the PHP version and the process is made very simple. See the tutorial for further details.

We have exciting plans for @Mail in 2007, so you can look forward to more frequent updates, new features, and improved support. Our team will continue to position @Mail as one of the best Webmail and Mail-server solutions on the market.

A new download demo of @Mail will be available by the 7th of March. In the meantime you can test-drive the online demo, or optionally purchase the software with 30-day return protection.

Our team would like to thank our clients feedback for the PHP release, and to all the people who helped test the new version. Enjoy the new release!

  2. Hi @mail team,
You see, nowadays everything gets a hip makeover if tagging and social bookmarking is involved in some fashion or the other. Another thing is being able to keep snippets of text or smallish comments or even code associated with a document or image.

So, for example, if I get an email from a friend, to which is attached the source code of a great program, I want to make a small comment that it is “in beta” and it is “version 0.9″ and “David thinks it’s great but John thinks it’s crap because it doesn’t look good enough for end users”.

Currently I have no way of doing this.
    **************
Neither does any leading email provider give this functionality GMAIL / YAHOO / etc., AFAIK.
    **************
So, that’s a Unique Selling Point.

    Implementation methods:
    1. Bring up a Pop-up area with everything that’s needed inside it.
    2. Probably a small button or column at one side which when clicked produces a pop-up or a docked slide-in which has all the details

Hope that helps in some way,
    ~toolyamazing

PS: It would be fitting and nice if you replied in a line or two explaining whether you liked the idea or not. I’m a web developer myself, so we could work something out maybe?

  3. For a trial version of @Mail one is available in PHP.

    Please see: http://atmail.com/download_atmail.php

As for the tagging feature for @Mail, this sounds like a good idea, we’ll aim to include this as an added module in the future
