Embracing CardDAV client support and Webmail CSS themes

May 25, 2010

Atmail - Now with CardDAV and Theme Support

As per the Atmail development roadmap, we are proud to announce two major enhancements for Atmail. CardDAV client support, allowing Atmail to view users address-books within the unified Webmail interface. The second feature is Webmail theme support in CSS. This demonstrates how easily Atmail is to customize for the frontend interface and provide users multiple Webmail themes.

With this release of CardDAV support, Atmail’s address book can now connect to a CardDAV server via open-standards as the source for all contact information, which is a major bonus for those wanting portable contact information, anywhere, anytime.

Atmail is one of the first Webmail clients to fully support CardDAV. With a growing number of desktop-clients and mobiles such as the iPhone and Android slated to support CardDAV, we are preparing to provide the complete open-protocol messaging solution. Say goodbye to proprietary formats for contact data.

New Features:

  • Added CardDAV client support - Connect to an external CardDAV server within Atmail for contact data
  • Theme support for the webmail user interface - New Granite theme available to those who prefer the corporate color palette
  • Installer support for Ubuntu 10.X - Server edition and Webmail client
  • New Windows Websync utility for Outlook - Improved performance, stability issues fixed and improved UTF-8 support
  • MD5 and CRYPT-MD5 support now available in the server edition - Choose the default password encryption type via the Webadmin for users and migrate from legacy platforms easier.

Improvements:

  • Improved thread processing performance, disk-level caching implemented
  • Optimized caching, IMAP performance and client-level cache support via JS
  • Calendar - Can now zoom to date view from month view
  • Calendar - Edit event now uses convenient datepickers
  • Improved mail search facility to support search keys
  • Improved link detection and conversion of plain text URLs into links
  • Improved handling of bad characters in To/Cc/Bcc fields
  • Improved mime parsing for invalid or poorly formatted messages
  • Better handling of wmv attachments for streaming in Windows Media Player
  • Improved thread handling, user-experience and performance
  • Improved Bedework calendar server support via CalDAV
  • Added Subadmin support to the REST API - Add, delete, modify
  • Improved Alias support via the REST API

Issues Fixed:

  • Users can again edit a contact’s photo from the view contact page
  • When uploading a photo for a contact the extension check is now case-insensitive
  • Fixed Unicode memory leak/corruption in WebSync
  • Fixed incorrect permission settings for Spamassassin directories upon installation
  • Fixed dependency issues with Ubuntu 10.4
  • Various Calendar bug fixes and improvements
  • Fixed some API issues including hardening permissions checks
  • Message bodies now showing in non-multipart text/plain messages
  • Add Attachment button now works in Safari without multiple clicks
  • Drag and Drop between sub-folders fixed
  • Subadmin permission checks hardened
  • Added paging for domains list in Webadmin
  • Various other small fixes for Webadmin and Subadmin

January 27, 2009

Ben Duncan, the founder of Atmail has embarked on a 6 month journey around the entire of Australia, in a specially modified 4WD Land Rover to demonstrate the ability to work online and maintain a virtual presence using the latest technologies.
The trip will take the Atmail mobile office into the far reaching parts of the Australian desert, across the coastline of Australia, into the red-center and across to the lush rainforests of tropical North-Queensland. The Atmail mobile office will be online using the latest BGAN Satellite and NextG mobile internet, to keep the pulse alive.

Atmail Mobile Office Snapshots

Using a custom version of the Atmail mail-server for remote connections, the 4WD runs it’s own SMTP server, with delivery of messages via an SMTP smarthost. The technology in the 4WD includes:

  • Linux eeePC used for the car Atmail server, SMTP and Web proxy
  • Telstra NextG mobile router
  • Linksys Wifi device
  • 60W solar panel connected to a 100ah battery
  • Dual battery isolator for charging the battery bank, and solar regulator to charge the battery when the 4WD is off.
  • Live streaming CarCam, updates an image every 5 minutes from the mobile-office “eye” embedded on the roof
  • Uniden GPS for navigation
  • Roof tent for sleeping
  • Macbook Pro and VMware used for development and SVN environments

 Celebrating 10 Years

December 8, 2008

This month, we celebrate the ten years since Ben Duncan’s creation of a webmail interface - one that has evolved into AtMail.

AtMail, much like the people who have been involved in it, has grown. It has taken leaps and bounds in line with our passion, our desire to create. AtMail has branched into several iterations suiting different needs of different groups of people. Forks have spawned, each one for a specific requirement, and each one growing into a wholly different product.

And so we take a look back:

1998
- Ben Duncan begins coding a new webmail interface in Nova Scotia during Dec 1998

1999
- Atmail launches into the marketplace as one of the first commercial Webmail clients available. Astounded by the demand for Atmail, first operations are run from Amsterdam, The Netherlands while Ben worked for an Internet startup company.

2000
- Funded by a large Xerox deal, Ben and friends decide to take Atmail onto the road. They purchase a 4×4 and kit to travel around the coast and outback of Australia for 10 months, while developing and supporting Atmail. When the 9600 baud GSM modem was out of coverage, the team would resort to using an accoustic coupler to commit code changes.

No kidding:

2001
- AtMail is offered at a very low price. It is a webmail interface that can integrate with the 4 major MTAs (Sendmail, Qmail, Postfix, and Exim).
- Corey Bissaillon joins the team.

2002
- An office in Sydney, Australia is acquired.
- The demand for AtMail rises. AtMail customers are using the webmail interface to provide access to corporate, educational, and government email systems.

2003
- AtMail 3.5 is released. Created using the Perl language, it is available in both the Linux and Windows operating systems.
- Andy Grayndler joins the team.

2004
- AtMail 4.0 is released. Boasting vast interface improvements, it is a significant step from the previous major release - aesthetically and functionally.
- Exim,ClamAV and SpamAssassin are adopted as solid components of the AtMail system.
- John Contad joins the team.

2005
- The AtMail 4.1 branch is created.
- Localization improvements are added, allowing people to tailor AtMail for different languages.
- Outlook Synchronization utilities, along with other applications for Microsoft Windows® are put into place.
- Jason Brown joins the team.

2006
- The AtMail Appliance is released. With its plug-and-play capabilities, client adoption for @Mail soars.
- The AtMail 4.6 branch is released, with extensive AJAX support and interface improvements.
- The videomail component of AtMail is created.
- Brad Kowalczyk joins the team.
- Idaho office acquired.

2007
- AtMail 5.0 is released. PHP is adopted as the development language.
- With the new version and large number of improvements, adoption once again rises. Numerous universities, government branches, and ISPs now use AtMail.
- Partnerships are forged with SWSoft/Parallels and Verio.com.
- Stewart Bazley joins the team.

2008
- With the new language and a bigger talent pool, the development for AtMail blitzes to its fastest. Upgrades are issued to customers on a monthly basis.
- AtMail Open, the free version of AtMail, is released.
- AtMail Cluster Edition is released.
- Development R&D centre acquired in Peregian Beach, Australia.
- Allan Wrethman, Ben Ferguson, Mikaela Duncan and Luke Stephens join the team.
- Largest growth and profit to date - Over 4,000 clients and 15M+ end user accounts.

It has been quite a journey for us here at AtMail. But while we have accomplished so much so far, this is modest compared to what we plan, and are looking forward to do. Abundant opportunities, changes and improvements lie ahead.

Stay tuned.
